The Texas Cares for Children program was developed a number of years ago through the collaborative efforts of the National Committee for the Prevention of Child Abuse. The Program has won the endorsement of former President Bush and then Secretary of Education, Lamar Alexander. Many schools have experienced the benefits of this program every year, and many schools are turned down each year because of the demand for the program.
The school program includes—but is not limited to—the following topics:
- Character education and leadership skills training
- Setting and achieving goals
- Making healthy choices
- Effectively dealing with bullying and peer pressure
- Overcoming challenges
- Understanding and respecting one another’s differences
- Drug and alcohol awareness
In addition, as an incentive for Texas high schoolers to reach their goals and further their education, a scholarship program was established as a part of the Texas Cares For Children platform. Each year, scholarships are made available to high school seniors who attend school in a district where the Texas Cares program has been presented.
